DDownload is a complete app database, organized like an AppStore, but with the difference that all the apps are free.

There are lots of categories to browse, from antivirus to word processors to video converters. However, it would have been nice if they had also used sub-categories as the list can be somewhat chaotic.

There is also a specific category for portable apps, and another for slim versions without toolbars. Furthermore, there are a number of practical application packages such as Windows Starter Kit, and lists of the best apps.

From the main program window, you can access the official website for each app, or where possible, download them directly. You can even configure DDownloader to integrate with JDownloader if you like working with this download manager.

This is definitely a convenient way of finding lots of new applications. However, the interface is only available in English and it is not possible to access any kind of review or data sheet for the apps.
